St. John's wort - exclusive cultivation
Our contract nursery grows St. John's wort exclusively for us. Surrounded by nature, the farm is located in its own fields. The 4th generation family business has 80 years of rich experience. Today, around 35 different crops of medicinal and spice plants are planted on 100 hectares.

St. John's wort is cultivated every 3 years. Organic cultivation is very time-consuming because the weed pressure is very high and the weeds have to be removed by hand. Furthermore, harvesting can only be done in the 2nd and 3rd year, otherwise the infestation by the St. John's wort beetle and the fungus Colletotrichum is too high.

Only the flowers and buds, or a small part of the stem, are harvested by hand. Immediately after harvesting, the St. John's wort is crushed and put into a specially developed oil recipe for maceration. Afterwards, it is stirred and shaken daily for 2-3 weeks so that the active ingredient hypericin is released into the oil. The typical reddish colour develops. Following this maturation process, the St. John's wort is filtered off and delivered directly to us.

St. John's wort oil is used in Europe mainly as a calming and antidepressant agent. It is also used for wound healing, muscle tension, inflamed skin or after sunbathing.
